Parents/Guardians May Now Attend School Sporting Events In-Person Pursuant to Executive Order 220

By Marc H Zitomer, Esq.

To the delight of many parents, Governor Murphy amended his prior Executive Order that banned parents and spectators from youth sporting events. Effective today:

  • Two parents or guardians per participating athlete under the age of 21 may attend interscholastic events.

  • Compliance with all NJ DOH guidelines for sports activities must still be followed. This includes, but is not limited to face coverings, social distancing. proper hand hygiene, etc.

Previously all non-professional and non-collegiate indoor athletic practices and competitions were subject to the indoor gathering limit of 10 people. However, if the number of individuals necessary for a no-contact practice, contact practice, or competition, such as players, coaches, and referees, was greater than 10 people, such a practice or competition could proceed, but no individuals could attend who were not “necessary” for the competition such as spectators.

Under today’s Executive Order, the number of people at such indoor gatherings is still limited to 35% of the capacity of the room, capped at 150 people. However, it is inclusive of all coaches, players, officials, and parents/guardians (capped at 2 per athlete) because they are now deemed “necessary” for the practice or competition.
